Camp Shane's newest summer camp, which encompasses more than 300 acres surrounded by an additional 25,000 acres of picturesque landscape, offers weight loss camps in two, four or six week increments. By providing fun and educational activities about healthy living choices, Camp Shane empowers children with the knowledge they need to completely re-shape their lives. Through an easy yet effective nutrition program, focusing on every day foods and portion control, as well as exciting outdoor activities, the children at Camp Shane can expect to not only lose weight and learn how to keep it off, but also have fun, learn new skills and gain the confidence they deserve. "At Camp Shane, we're not a ‘fat camp, diet or boot camp.' Instead of focusing solely on dieting, Camp Shane is an exciting and educational program that helps teach children realistic and achievable ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Every child at Camp Shane is treated as part of our family, and our dedication has helped us become one of the most recognizable youth weight loss camp facilities in the country," says David Ettenberg, Owner/Director of Camp Shane. Diverse activities available at Camp Shane include sports, fitness, arts and crafts and exciting pool recreational activities. Camp Shane also offers an array of cooking and nutritional classes to help children learn the importance of portion control, as well as how to make healthy selections when dining out. Additionally, Camp Shane Arizona offers an optional, extensive and exciting horsemanship program. The program, which is run by experienced wranglers, includes more than 80 horses. Children experience the joys of caring for a horse and the physical benefits of riding, while building their self-confidence and balance skills. Additional information about Camp Shane Arizona, including an enrollment form and request for a complimentary brochure can be found here. --Ends

MAYER, AZ - Camp Shane, the longest running youth fitness and weight loss camp for kids, recently announced it has opened a new facility in Arizona to better serve the western US market from Texas to California. The recent expansion is a result of feedback from parents out west who wanted their children to experience the healthy benefits of Camp Shane, but wanted an option closer to home.

My Son Just got home from
My Son Just got home from this camp, and he did lose the weight! I was not a beleiver until I went to pick him up and didn't relize for about 5 seconds that the kid I dropped 4 weeks earlier was my kid! OMG - lets see how he does keeping it off...
I can honestly say that that
I can honestly say that that picture is taken of a girl who is either A) photoshopped, or B) attended, lost weight, came back for more and lost more weight...
I attended Shane for 9 weeks (the longest they go for) and NO ONE had that sort of transformation. No one.
Okay... You don't want to go
Okay...
You don't want to go here...
You sound a lot like me. And I went to Camp Shane... two summers in a row.
And got kicked out at the end of my second summer, because I was too depressed for them to handle.
They aren't a bad camp, it's just that they apparently have no idea how to handle someone who publicly shows that there is something mentally wrong with her... even if that mental problem exists because she is overweight.
If your parents won't let you go, ask them if they'll let you try doing Nutrisystem or something like that (maybe join a local Weight Watchers? They say 18, but talk to them, and see if they'd let you participate if you got a Doctor's note.
Kids are going to tease and make fun of people who aren't like them, this is including overweight/obese kids. And until you decide to do something (and not take the easy way out, like I did-fat camp-) about your life, you will get teased.
Camp Shane is in all honesty, a good place, but they don't teach you how to make more than one or two healthy meals, you are isolated, so you have like barely any idea of how to lose/keep the weight off in a real world setting... and you are exercising 8 hours a day... you can't do that at home.
I lost 30 lbs, and gained back 15 of that, because I wasn't exercising as much, even though I was eating better.
Talk to your parents about options.
If they still can't get up to speed with the fact that you are in danger of so many different diseases, have your doctor tell them that something besides teasing and taunting you needs to be done.
Where else can they Defy

Hi I am researching Camp
Hi I am researching Camp Shane and I want to send my boy (8) there. He is 130 lbs. I was wondering if there are any other scholarships in addition to the ones the camp provides?
This camp is such a great
This camp is such a great idea! Their are so many kids that are overweight. It all starts with us as parent to influence our children to make healthier choices. If we can show our youth the benefits of eating right and exercise, they will be able to keep these habits into adulthood.
Wow! What a big
Wow! What a big transformation. It means that it is really great to be in this boot camp. Start keeping in shape while young. This is a great idea of giving a healthy living.
There are teens with regards to their big weight they tend to pity themselves and ashamed of going out. So this is one option that parents could give to their teens.
Here is a site that I am promoting: Boot Camps

By the way, I just need to tell you that size 9 is NOT fat, it's just not the size you want to be or the size you think you should be. You're being too hard on yourself.
It's okay to want to be healthier, but don't tear yourself apart because you have some idea of what 'perfect' is supposed to be. There is no such thing as perfect.
A 12 years old is starting puberty, and your body is about to change on its own and there's not much you can do about it. For girls it usually means a little extra temporary body weight. That's normal. For puberty a girl has to either reach 115 lbs or 15% body fat to trigger the jump to the next phase of life. Be patient and try not to be so hard on yourself.
Size isn't what makes a person happy. I know size 2's who stress over everything they eat, and still look in the mirror and don't like what they see.
Personally, I don't mind being a little over weight as long as I'm enjoying life. And, I'd rather not deprive myself of everything enjoyable just so I can say I wear size 2. I don't want to be a size 20 either because then you're physically limited and there goes the enjoyment of life. An average size 10-12 is just fine with me. I was considerably smaller when I spent 5-6 days a week at the gym, of course I had a lot less actual time having fun too.
Unfortunately, 'Fat Camp' has
Unfortunately, 'Fat Camp' has a negative image. Parents and sometimes children don't want to admit there are body image problems. My daughter went nuts when I said I wanted to send my granddaughter to Camp Shane Arizona for the summer. Then I talked her into going on the web-site to check it out.
Explain to your parents that it's about self-esteem, and learning to feel good about yourself regardless of what size you are. That is what Camp Shane does.
It teaches you to be active, But more importantly it gives you confidence and teaches you how to deal with negativity aimed at you.
The fact is that kids and adults all have a little mean streak. It comes from being insecure. If they can find someone else who's heavier, not as smart, not as pretty etc. as them, they can feel less insecure about themselves. When someone is really insecure, they also feel the need to point it out to others by calling people names or making rude comments. When people do that, try to feel sorry for them because they're pitable, but they can only get under your skin and hurt you if you chose to let them. Hopefully you're more secure than they are.
If your parents are concerned with the cost, tell them there are scholarship rates available and to contact the New York Camp Shane office. I wasn't aware of the scholarships until my granddaughter was already there and fully paid for. The scholarships come from people like me who are happy with Camp Shane and make donation back to help other young people.
By the way, Can I just tell you 'YOU ROCK' that you want to take control of your life. Your parents love you & they'll come around when they know how important it is to you and understand your reasons. Write them a letter about what it means to you, have them read it and then talk. Sometimes we get caught up in an argument and forget to say things that are important. The letter will help you make your points without distractions.
If you think it would help let them read this blog. If they want to talk to another adult, post here and I'll watch for it. Good luck!
Hi - for starters you need to
Hi - for starters you need to tell your parents how you feel about being made fun of (especially by them). Try and find an ally like a relative, an aunt, godmother etc. and discuss the issue with them. If you trust anyone at your school (teacher / counselor) perhaps you could mention it to them to take up with your parents as well.

I really want to go to Camp
I really want to go to Camp Shane. I signed myself up on their website. I told my parents i wanted to go to camp and they were considering it. When i mentioned weight loss camp, they were terribly upset, although i am 12 years old, 5"0 and 140 pounds. I wear an adult size 9 jeans, compared to the girl's in my grade who still wear kid's size 14. I feel so uncomfortable in anything i wear. I hate my body, and i have absolutely no self-confidence. People (my parents including) always make fun of my weight. My family can definitely afford it! But my parents are just refusing to let me go. I don't want to go into high school, or even grade 8, still fat so more and more people tease me. Does anyone have any tips to help me convince my parents to let me go to camp?
i wonder what sending a child
i wonder what sending a child to these kinds of places would do to them psychologically. Maybe its better to just stay active as a parent; children are very likely to imitate the habits of their parents.
Wow that pretty worked huh.
Wow that pretty worked huh. Have you seen the episode where Cartman sent to boot camp for fat kids? Well its very funny in his case.
Shame on me? Well, frankly
Shame on me?
Well, frankly you seem a little off kilter. If I had to guess by your manic response, your child's 'hell-hole' isn't Camp Shane at all .... maybe it's closer to home?
At the very least your child has a parent with a large flair for the dramatics.
My grandaughter absolutely enjoyed the experience, lost 23 pounds total in 4 weeks and walked with her head very high upon her return. The only difficult time she had at camp was the rotation in and out of campers. That's probably something they could give some thought to enhancing. The environment is so extrememly tight-knit and supporting that the children quickly become 'bestest friends' with other children. Unfortunately, when that child goes home earlier than your child, it is heartbreaking for a couple days until one of their other new bestest friends fills the void.
We're in November now, long past the attention span of a typical 10 year old, and she still exchanges emails with her Camp Shane friends, one in California, one in Texas and one in Northern Arizona. Wow, really sounds like a traumatic hell-hole that she's fighting to forget, right?
Maybe weight isn't your child's primary problem? Maybe she is even an isolated circumstance of something negative that did happen at Camp Shane? I don't know, but I do know that Camp Shane was a very very positive experience for my granddaughter and her friends.
Also, since you claim it was years ago, it couldn't be Arizona Camp Shane, they've only been open a year.
Unfortunately, sometimes we parents are prone to look elsewhere for blame on the messes we actually create. I know exactly how my grandaughter became overweight; there's no 'big-bone theory' BS excuse, no glaudular problem excuse, she simply inherited poor habits from her family.
She also has a giant flair for the dramatics inherited from her mother, so the tear-filled despondent phone call home when her bestest friend went home 2 weeks before her had us so concerned that it almost sent us flying up the highway to get her. Then a very caring counselor came on the phone, explained the situation and assured us that he would personally buddy her and her other best friend until they felt better. A little over 24 hours later we received a happy phone call telling us all about the new horse she was assigned to take care of at camp.
I don't mean to question your integrity, but your comments fly in direct contrast of everyone and I do mean everyone else I've communicated with about Camp Shane.
Nice review!
Nice review!
I think boot camps helps
I think boot camps helps teens to learn in a disciplinary environment and to overcome various addiction & behavioral problems. But this is not always be the only thing which we should consider while choosing one. We must also get proper information about the school and their reputation as their are many such organization that are not much good and they just do their business nothing else.
Shame on you for sending
Shame on you for sending your child to this hell hole. Our daughter came back so emotionally scarred that it was years until she could tell us what it was really like.
Take your kid to a shrink now (I guarantee she's afraid to tell you the truth) and don't let anybody you know send their kid to "Camp Shame".
I can't encourage you
I can't encourage you enough. I enrolled my granddaughter for the 4 week program with an option for 2 more. She has now been there 2 weeks. I called and spoke to her counselor yesterday and she lost 12 lbs in the first 2 weeks - That's almost a pound a day! Based on that you might think she's morbidly obese, she isn't, in fact she was about the same size as the girl in the before and after. She was only chubby but I was scared that she was continueing the pattern of obesity in our family. I chose to invest in her chance at a different life.
So... the weight loss is overwhelming, but the real reason I wanted her to attend was low self-esteem issues. That's going stellar! You wouldn't believe the quality of counselors at the program.
It is a pricey program, but worth every dime. If you have difficulty meeting the course fee, I understand there are scholarships available to make it more affordable.
If you're interested, feel free to email me and I will forward the email I received along with the contact information I have.
I know I'm a little biased right now because our experience with Camp Shane is so new, but I really believe I just gave my Granddaughter a brand new lease on life.
You mentioned it was a brother. I don't know if this will help you to make a decision, but when I took my granddaughter to the dropoff, there was a young man about 12 years old. He was sullen with badly dyed black hair peeking out of a hoodie pulled down over his face as much as possible. He didn't strike me as a very happy child. However, I see him him in the online photos now and he is a completely different child. The hoodie is gone, the anger is gone, he's laughing and hamming it up and engaged in every single photo of him online. He honestly doesn't even resemble the angry boy I saw at the airport. Remember thats after only 2 weeks.
Well, I would like to enroll
Well, I would like to enroll my little brother to this program. If the before and after picture is for real.Surely he will want to join the camp too..haha David of max gxl australia
