I was at a meeting last week, and someone asked me if we did things with the rural community, and I thought well we don’t directly. Most of the fathers that access our information seem to be urban. It got me thinking about when I was brought up in the country and how a very unique situation farmers have with their children. And this is because usually their children are seen as an extra labour unit to either get the cows in or do jobs on the farm, which are not paid for.
So I thought that farmers over urban fathers have a great opportunity to get more involved with their children and to spend more time with them. Usually the farm has the family home on it, so it’s a lot more accessible to their children and also to the farmers in general.
I think more farmers can see their time with their children as being one of bonding and if their children need to be used as labour units then to spend more time with their fathers then so be it.

Hi
Stefan left a comment on my blog awhile ago and I have been meaning to get back to him.
Anyway...
I am not a farmer but I am rural. My son is 4 and he loves to help with the woodpile [ I burn wood for heat ]or to help build something [ gotta love Bob the Builder ]
His grandparents live up the road and they do have a farm. If Jay doesn't get to help with the haying he gets mad , just loves it.He also likes to help with the animals.
Maybe this will go away when he is older but I don't think so.
A labor unit?
Maybe...but At least I don't have to play nintendo to be with him!
What do urban parents do anyway, take them to the park and hope there are no used condoms or needles laying around ? :]
Love rural life and I am very glad I am raising my son in the country
Thanks
Ron
