Advantages of having a baby with a full nappy

Lance just posted an excellent comment to Scott's supermarket article ... as a side note he mentioned:

"Just for reference, if you have a baby with a full nappy, hold it up at chest height to carry, instead of leaving it in the stroller. It's AMAZING how many people will let you past and how quickly the teller will ring the items on ... "

which inspired me to create a list of other situation where a baby wiht a full nappy will make all the difference:

* getting a whole seat row all to yourself on a plane
* motivating visitors who don't want to leave to perform a quick exit
(for additional expediency you can always threaten to change the baby in front of them)
* leaving early when you are visiting somebody
* riding a lift all by yourself
* getting back at your "BO problem" colleague in the office
* convincing your dentist that the root canal treatment he suggested really isn't necessary (although that one might backfire)
* letting off lots of farts yourself and when you get raised eyebrows tell everyone that the baby has eaten something new for the first time
* covering up for a curry-gone-wrong that you've cooked
* cutting short a boring meeting you never wanted to attend in the first place
* creating a bit of extra personal space at a rock concert ... OK may be not

The list goes on ... :-)

Hehehe. Love the list!

Hehehe. Love the list!

Yep - there are a few. In

Yep - there are a few.

In addition to most that you list, I've used one or the other of mine for:

- Excusing myself from rabid car salesmen bent on selling me something I don't want
- Similarly, getting away from other pushy shop-type attendants
- Getting back at smokers who were smoking in non-smoking sections of restaurants or in smoking sections but when I am trying to eat (yes, I smoke, but not when people are eating and no longer inside)
- Breaking the bubble of teenagers who think babies are 'just lovely and I want one myself'
- Getting back at friends of ours who would always change THEIR baby in front of US, no matter what - and without warning (I picked my moments for these).
- shutting up 'well meaning' relatives (by offering them the opportunity to change her for me)
- Scientific discovery.

The last is mainly to figure out a) what a baby will ingest off the floor that should not have been there and b) what the baby cannot digest and thus it comes out the other end whole. Examples are marbles, small magnets, lego, corn kurnels, raisins, wholegrain rice and while carrots usually dissolve in the tummy acid, the resulting orange tinge to the output is unmistakable (as is the aroma).

I am certain there were others, but the memory is fading a bit. Certainly the situation was a boon for getting rid of unwanted guests or making a timely exit from somewhere.

For further reference (and advice), if the baby didn't 'produce' when we had a need in these situations (they CAN be contrary like that and deliberately hold onto it until you get into a place where it would be most inconvenient for them to let go), a judicious squeeze of a sensitive spot or a safety pin applied in an inconspicuous area can have a similar disquieting effect and allow one to make their exit quickly. Note: the safety pin thing was advice from my sister (of all people). It was never used by yours truly and I list it as a last resort only! None of our kids show any sign of resentment or long-lasting trauma from the occasional 'prompting' though.
