Dad's music for babies

One of our blog readers and dad Matthias Wichtrup has told us about his solution to the problem of making babies go to sleep: compose music and play it to them. Here's his story:

I am a musician and I have a little home recording studio. So I created for my son 10 CDs with slow-moving sound collages which is the perfect way to put him to sleep. On each CD I put 80 minutes of this very relaxing music and I have to say it really does work - and not only on babies!

Sweet Dreamy World - Soothing and calming bedtime music for babies

Listen to a sample of Sweet Dreamy World here:

Sleep is one of our most fundamental needs. On average, a young baby needs around 15 hours of sleep over a 24 hour period. You want to do what is best for your child, and helping form good sleep patterns is part of that. Your goal is to help him learn to sleep and fall asleep alone.

Relaxation helps to soothe and relax before you put your baby to bed for the night. This includes a warm bath, a massage, rocking and patting and soft music. Especially repetitive melodies can be very reassuring for your baby.

The series of Sweet Dreamy World creates a gentle acoustic soundscape and provides a comforting, relaxing environment.

If you like the sound of that you can download the entire series of CDs from www.lulu.com, Keyword: Sweet Dreamy world.

Great stuff. Would be good

Great stuff. Would be good for me when trying to get our son down, as I get more upset that he does :)

I have always heard that Baroque music is really good because it tends to have about 60 beats per minute, which is similar to (though slower than) the human heart. I don't know about the accuracy of this though.

Great stuff. I myself used

Great stuff. I myself used to sing to our two girls when they were newborns - same effect. Usually found that Tom Jones (his early stuff), Englebert Humperdinck or some other 50s / 60s / 70s crooners would certainly send them off to sleep.

I must admit that I also tried music of different genres to a similar effect. The eldest was best going to sleep on David Bowie (and it had to be LOUD!!!) and the youngest settled best on Pink Floyd or Peter Gabriel.

Playing Eagles or Supertramp while the youngest fed was also good, while the eldest preferred Cat Stevens or Enya.

I guess it proves that music hath charm......
