Check out our global directory of father support groups. Fed up with toxic baby bottles

As a dad who does most of the bottle feeds I've just found out that I am apparently poisoning my little boy. A recent study of the Environmental California Research and Policy Centre found some pretty shocking results on toxic chemicals leached into milk or formulae from baby bottles. The sad thing is – it almost doesn't matter which brand of baby bottles you chose – they are all bad. Click here for the full research report. One of the most problematic substances identified in the report is "Bisphenol A" which has been linked to serious diseases even at low levels of exposure. Bisphenol A is commonly used in the manufacturing of clear polycarbonate plastic because of its beneficial characteristics for injection molding. The Research Center tested major brands Avent, Dr. Brown's, Evenflo, Gerber and Playtex for their propensity to leach Bisphenol A at levels considered harmful to humans and infants. Hi there, Adiri Inc (USA)
Hi there,
Adiri Inc (USA) have recently launched their new bottle that is 100% polycarbonate free...called the Adiri Natural Nurser. This bottle has received rave reviews particularly due to the controversy of toxic bottles, and the lack of alternatives available to parents.
Adiri are also advocates of breastfeeding however as many of us know, lots of women are unable to breastfeed and sometimes dads or other caregivers have to feed baby when mum can't be there...so they created their original bottle the Breastbottle nurser (Bbn).
The Bbn has been well known for it's soft breastlike feel, especially when filled with milk so the acceptance rate of fussy babies who have had trouble weaning onto a bottle has been very high.
The new bottle which is due for release later this year in NZ will be much easier to use, comes in three different flows and will be much cheaper than Bbn.

Hey Lianne - thanks ... OK I
Hey Lianne - thanks ... OK I get the "breastfeeding is best" thing which we are doing but even with breastfeeding there is a need for containers (expressing milk, mum not around, etc.). For many other parents out there breastfeeding is not what they want to do so I just think it's ironic that in the iPod age we apparently can't even produce a non toxic baby bottle that doesn't break and is convenient to handle. You are right about public pressure no doubt - our hope was to do this through sites like this one.
Alternatives: -
Alternatives:
- breastfeeding is best!
- use glass bottles for bottle feeding
- use non-polycarbonate sippy cups.
Tommy Tippee easiflow insulated bottle is polypropylene with a silicon straw (available in NZ supermarkets) or Klean Kanteen (stainless steel, with non-BPA plastic sipper)
- if you introduce your children to using a small glass as early as practicable, then the sippy cup will only be needed for car journeys etc
- switch your child to organic cows milk or A2 milk (after 12 months)
-tell others and spread the word ... public outcry is the fastest way to effect change!
Thanks guys! Great tip -
Thanks guys! Great tip - Stef
An option to glass bottles
An option to glass bottles might be bottles made from polyamid (PA) or polypropylen (PP). You can find such bottles listed as "bfree", which means they don't lose Bisphenol A when heated up.
Maybe that helps...
