Gone Fishing

Activities with children that don’t break the bank can be a struggle for a Part-Time-Dad, as a PTD I am sometimes over keen to please.

However I have learnt it’s not about the money I spend on my children that makes for a great day but rather the quality of time spent with each of my children.

Quality time with my 13 year old son Christian

What to do with a young man who given the chance would be happy to play video games all day?
Easy I don’t own any video games, so what can I do?
With Wellington weather being cold, wet and windy what a better way to enjoy some quality time with my boy, than going fishing.

Living in Wellington’s windy south coast, fishing spots are a plenty, Christian and I however have our favourite spot, we fish off a wharf and cast our line against strong winds into the entrance of Wellington harbour. The beauty of saving fishing time for the coldest, windiest days means there is no one else mad enough to be out on the wharf.

Fishing is easy, and it has never disappointed us with catch after catch, not to keep we throw the fish back into the harbour.

Equipment :
• Fishing rod, hooks, sinker and line (from $50 one off purchase)
• Bait (anything smelly and fishy)
• Sharp knife (to cut the bait, not the good kitchen type either)
• Bucket (helps carry everything)
• Towel (to wipe hands and equipment on)

And let’s not forget warm waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear, no point catching a cold

Conclusion:
Fishing is loads of fun, and a great way to enjoy the winter months outside.

Not to mention, once home out of the cold nothing beats a hot chocolate. Now what to do with my girls?
Get out and enjoy some quality time with your children

Warm regards

- Eric

Fishing is something my

Fishing is something my husband and I enjoy doing with his daughters, and they love it.

Something else we've recently gotten into, which works great if you're an avid fisherman (or woman) is Geo Caching.

My family started a few months ago and we LOVE it. It gives us a chance to enjoy the outdoors, spend quality time together, and it's something we all enjoy doing. To sum it up, for those unfamiliar with it, it's kind of like a treasure hunt, but you need a GPS unit to do it, which majority of avid fishermen have already (as with my hubby).

They have their own website, so everyone should google it and give it a try once. You won't be disappointed and neither will the kids!

Also, we frequently go to the local nature centers too. The usually have trails for hiking, play grounds etc. and there are several in our area, only one of which charges entry ($3 adults, $1 child). So there's something else that is family and financial friendly. :-)
