Midwives are a very important part of the whole pregnancy experience, and having a good or bad one can really shape the way you see pregnancy especially from a support point of view. I think like in any industry, there are good and bad midwives and I guess the profession has a lot of people who really shouldn't be there!
This is a case of making sure that for soon-to-be new parents both mother and child are taken care of, but also the father is given relevant information in this time too.
As we all know it takes 2 people to make a baby but only one parent is focused on.
The midwives that I have met are busy, overworked and really seem like they have too much on their plates, as far as personalized service goes - only a handful seem to actually care! It's almost like taking your car to the mechanic and then telling them what to fix and how to fix it!!
I find the whole experience a little blasé for my liking, a couple of times throughout the pregnancy both my wife and I have been left feeling powerless and given irrelevant information that was more like "scare tactics" than relevant/helpful information! This has been a general consensus from a few of the other new parents that I have spoken to also!
We have been to the delivery suite 5 times and these are unscheduled visits by the way, all because there have been problems, and these are because we complained to the midwife – now lets take our hat off to them would you want to get out of bed in the middle of the night and on Saturday and Sundays, and deal with neurotic first time parents – NO DAMN WAY!
Towards the end of our pregnancy we found a great midwife - Jenni Doust and we would recommend her, she cares and wants to help both you and your baby, as a father I felt like she was there for me, making sure I was included also.
Therefore at the end of the day have they become too complacent with their job or is it a case of don't worry until there is something to worry about! As new first time parents we are guided by these people to give us information and keep us grounded.
