My first Valentine's Day as a dad

14 February 2008 - my first Valentine's Day as a dad. What does it feel like? IT SUCKS just like all the years before. V-Day has got to be the corniest day ever. For the last 6 weeks or so I had to put up with major obstructions in the form of red hearts and Valentine's Card stands in just about every shop in town. Worse still, I had to read, listen to or sit through constant reminders or ads that I'll be sleeping in the dog house should I DARE forget have a card/gift/special plan for my partner on V-Day.

Fortunately I am blessed with a wife who sees through all the corniness and who doesn't expect any kind of special treatment today. I'm also a firm believer of "Random Romance" and would give my wife flowers, gifts, cards or a special treat whenever I feel like it or when an opportunity presents itself.

I struggle to understand how any dad out there would totally buy in to V-Day (apart from in the literal sense). So today my "heart" goes out to all the dads who feel like they HAVE TO do something special to please their partner. Next year - be brave and be honest! If you don't like V-Day and think it's all bollocks - tell it like it is! Don't believe the hype and enjoy the freedom of random acts of romance.

(if you happen to own a restaurant, gift card or flower shop - sorry guys ... but I had to be say it)

Hey Hanna - thanks for the

Hey Hanna - thanks for the comment. I love discussing V-Day :-) You are right my wife would certainly not expect a card or anything from me on V-Day :-) I prefer to surprise her during the year though and do all the things you suggested for V-Day. The reason I think V-Day sucks is because I reject the idea (which I often find portrayed in the media) that you can be an idiot-partner all year but it's all good as long as you give your wife a card and some flowers for V-Day. I think V-Day is almost an excuse so you can 'patch' things. Well maybe that is the idea? :-)

Dude!!! just give your wife

Dude!!! just give your wife a card! come on she is the mother of Your child! just show her a little appreciation. trust me all women know valentines day is cheesy, but at the end of the day..we still like flowers!..and good food! and a nice bottle of wine!!! and would WAY rather be with a guy that did something nice for us on valentines day (and mothers day and all other "Hallmark" days) than come up with an excuse for NOT doing it. No one likes a moaner. next valentines day i dare you to do something nice for her! for starters she wont expect it! so she'll love the suprise, and who knows you might actually enjoy it!

My husband hates the fact

My husband hates the fact that prices for flowers skyrocket right around V-Day, so his strategy is to buy me flowers two weeks before Valentine's and then again two weeks after. I get twice as many flowers without all the fuss. He also can pick out the perfect card...every time. He doesn't have a way with words himself, but he definitely has a way with a cardsmith's words...right to my heart.

Love the blog, guys!
