The DIYFather Book Call Me Dad! Media Release

Call me Dad! A Manual for new fathers
By Stefan Korn, Scott Lancaster, Eric Mooij

There are thousands of parenting books out there, but when three Wellington guys became dads, they quickly realized there was nothing that spoke directly to them as men. They wanted something easy to read, instructional without being overly academic and providing a male perspective on all the stuff first-time dads need to know. Call Me Dad! is written for a new generation of men, to address this lack. Fathers are now much more deeply involved. More and more dads are no longer content with traditional, stereotyped roles and are questioning their contribution to the upbringing of their children.

Call Me Dad! is a down-to-earth yet upbeat, humorous and inspiring guide for new fathers and fathers-to-be covering everything men need to know about pregnancy, childbirth and baby's first year. It delivers a strong message that there is nothing to fear about being a dad and that the father's role is vital in a child's life, right from the start. Chapters lead the reader through the processes, decisions and need-to-know stuff in logical order: pregnancy; preparing for the baby; surviving birth (what guys can and should do during labour and birth); life after birth (handling the baby, hygiene, dealing with visitors, etc.); the first three months, the first six months; and so on through to a review of that whirlwind first year. From three months on, exercises (fully vetted by SPARC's Active Movement Programme) show how dads can also help with the physical development of their tiny future All Black/Silver Fern.

Throughout, there are full-colour photos showing dads doing their bit, from choosing baby seats to changing nappies and bathing the baby, and real-life story snippets from fathers offering advice and encouragement on everything from antenatal classes to labour and beyond.

Scott Lancaster, Eric Mooij and Stefan Korn are three dads who launched the website www.DIYFather.com in 2007 in response to a serious shortage of advice about parenting geared exclusively towards men. The global response has been phenomenal, with more than 100,000 website visitors/podcast listeners around the world. DIYFather has also recently been involved in delivering guy-only courses for new dads as part of the Plunket PEPE programme and in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development's SKIP team.
