DIY with dad - Easter 2010

If you're stuck for a little DIY / craft project with your kids in the run up to Easter - check out the following suggestion from our "Make it Ruby" series.

What you need: plastic eggs, metallic acrylic paints, paint brushes, glitter, jewels, sequins, acrylic adhesive

Step-by-step guide:
1. Take the plastic eggs and gently ruff up the outer surface.
2. Apply thin layers of metallic acrylic paint so it will dry faster.
3. Add your design or patterns over your base color. After it dries enhance the sparkle with glitter, jewels, & sequins.

One-minute DIY projects - Turkeys (part 1)

Yes, yes, yes - it's that time of the year again when Turkeys all around the US are feeling a bit anxious. Thanksgiving is just around the corner ... so use the spirit of the moment to enspire your kids with some homemade turkey (of a different kind). Basically all you need is a bunch of pipe cleaners and you're all set. Here are the instructions.

Things you will need:
1 Pipe Cleaner, light brown 12"
3 Pipe Cleaner, dark brown 12"
5 Pipe Cleaner, any color 6"
* Scissors
* Pencil
* Googly Eyes

Step by step:
1) Take a single dark brown pipe cleaner and twirl it around the pencil, then slide it off of the pencil keeping the spiral shape.
2) Twist the two other dark brown pipe cleaners together to make a thicker one (same length).
3) Twirl the thick dark brown pipe cleaner around the pencil but twirl back over itself to create the body. Slide it off of the pencil keeping the spiral shape.

DIY in minutes - creative crystals

Sometimes it is hard to find little DIY projects that the little ones can do mostly by themselves (but that doesn't mean you should go and watch the footy while they are doing it). The one we're describing here allows your child to be creative along with making something that they can have on display (until the dog eats it). This little project is great for children aged 3-5 and helps develop their eye-hand coordination and decision making.

Things you will need:
* Six 12 inch pipe cleaners
* 44 to 66 Translucent Tri Beads
* Old Scissors
* 18 inch Ribbon

1) Your child chooses six pipe cleaners, colors of their choice. Then if your child is strong enough, cuts each pipe cleaner in half. You should now have 12 pipe cleaners.

2) Help your child hold 11 pipe cleaners together in a cylindrical shape and wraps the 12th pipe cleaner around the middle tightly. Make sure the pipe cleaners stay in place.
